Supporting New Drug Discoveries with Various Chiral Technologies
Based on customers’ requests, DAISO has been manufacturing and providing numerous optically active compounds indispensable to development of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
We have been providing industry with optical active alkanediols, epoxides manufactured by optical resolution using both microorganisms and asymmetric catalysts. In addition to receiving a license for manufacturing chiral amino acids and hydroxy acids by optical resolution with chiral amine catalyst in 2001, in 2003 we became licensed for the production of optically active hemiesters, the raw materials of which are meso types of cyclic acid anhydrides.

*1 These are substances that, although they have the same chemical formula, have different three-dimensional and mirror image structures; much like the right and left hands.
Most of the substances like proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and lipids that our body is made of are optically active (substances).Their varying shapes give them differenteffects and functions, thus making them valuable as pharmaceuticals.
Unique Chiral Technologies Support Drug Development
Optical Resolution by Microorganisms
Using cost-effective assimilation method*2 by microorganisms, we manufacture and sell multi-ton scale of optically active alkanediols and tetrahydrofurancarboxylic acid. Also, using an enzymatic method modified by gene-recombinant technology, we perform optical resolution of α-, or β- hydroxycarboxylic acids.

*2 Resolution method where microorganisms grow by the enanitioselective assimilation of undesired half of racemic body as a sole carbon source. The derivatives obtained from them are used as intermediates for active pharmaceutical ingredients such as new antibiotics and anti-AIDS medicine.
Optical Resolution Using Jacobsen's Catalyst
We manufacture optically active epichlorohydrin in industrial scale by kinetic hydrolytic resolution of racemic one using a salen catalyst developed by Prof. Jacobsen.

Optical Resolution of Racemic Amino Acids
Chiral amino acids or hydroxycarboxylic acids are able to be provided manufactured by optical resolution of anhydrides of racemic amino acids and α-hydroxycarboxylic acids using cinchona alkaloid-type of base catalysts based on technology developed by Prof. Deng.

Highly Selective Desymmetrization Technology
Chiral hemi-esters*3 are obtained in high yield from mesomeric acid anhydrides*4 by stereoselective addition of alcohol using cinchona alkaloid-type base catalysts based on technology developed by Prof. Deng.

*3 A variety of optically active compounds such as carboxylic acid with amino group or hydroxy group in a γ position and γ-lactone can be synthesized from optically active hemiesters.
*4 A wide range of cyclic acid anhydrides, such as glutaric acid derivatives easily synthesized, are available as raw materials.
